Portrait Photography in Dundee

Dundee is a great place for contemporary portrait photography. There are so many locations that make good settings for a photo session – the riverside, the parks, and by a whole range of buildings with different styles from modern to traditional. I could continue but I think that you get the idea.

Portrait photography at City Quay, DundeeJust before Christmas I had a portrait session with TJ and Sarah, who are engaged to be married in the Spring. We had a lot of fun, despite the near freezing temperatures, and got some gorgeous photographs.

City Quay, Dundee

Our location for the morning was the City Quay in Dundee. This is an ideal waterfront location in Dundee for contemporary or lifestyle portrait photography, with a whole range of different settings as well as a few coffee shops, and restaurants where you can take a break and top up the caffeine levels.

Portrait photography at City Quay, Dundee in TaysideWe found some beautiful backlighting and The Frigate Unicorn makes an interesting backdrop to the photography and is worth a visit if you are interested in Dundee’s history.

Engagement photography at City Quay, DundeeAlso nearby is Discovery Point, this is well worth a visit and you can go onboard the RSS Discovery used by Captain Scott for his Antarctic expedition.

Lifestyle portrait photography at City Quay, DundeeI always enjoy photography at City Quay as there is such a good range of locations to get very different photographs within a small area, as these images of TJ and Sarah show.

The Wedding Planner

Today I am really happy to introduce a guest blogger. Alison Tinlin, is a wedding planner whose company Plans and Presents is based in Glasgow. Alison offers a wedding planning service throughout Scotland and the UK and has received some great testimonials from very happy brides. After planning her own wedding she realised that she had a flair for organising weddings and events so Plans and Presents was born.

As Alison says “We are all unique and so each event should be unique. I believe that you, the client will benefit form my one-to-one personalised, friendly approach and that fact that your best interests will always be at the forefront. I hope that is reflected in my motto – Your Day, Your Way”.

Sometimes we get so caught up with the finer details of our wedding day that we forget the reason why we are doing it in the first place.

Sometimes there is so much pressure to compete or be unique that love gets forgotton a bit, anyone seen BRIDE WARS ? All our nerves can get frazzled now and then and we can say things in anger, stress and frustration that we don’t really mean.

  • Give yourself time to take stock every now and then.
  • Sit down with your H2B, and just have you and him time.
  • It might be a night out at the cinema, it might be dinner, it might be a cuddle in front of the telly.
  • Its not important where, its just the doing it.

And when we are on the subject of taking stock, take time to consider yourself too.

Sometimes in the hustle , bustle of party and wedding planning , we sometimes forget ourselves too.
We get so carried away with arrangements and the busy busy busy that we don’t take enough time for ourselves.

I will give you the advice that anybody would , in that it is important to eat well, drink plenty of water, take a little light exercise if you can, and if you think you need it, take a multivitamin.
Once a week, take a night out for you [like you would with date night] and just chill.

Run a bubble bath, give yourself a home manicure and pedicure, put on a facemask, exfoliate and paint those nails.
Light the candles , have a glass of wine, put on your favourite music and read that trashy romance novel.

Like taking a step back and prioritising the importance of your relationship, you need to do the same thing for yourself.

So much of what Alison says is true, and I can definitely recommend using a wedding planner to help you with one of the most important days in your life.

Photographing one of my sporting heroes…Update

Friday, January 8th, 2010

I have been a motorcycle racing fan for quite some time, partly because it is usually a little more exciting with more overtaking in one lap than a whole Formula 1 race and partly because I ride motorbike!

My favourite series is MotoGP world championship and the last few years have had some good British interest, especially in the 125 class. I like to support all the UK riders but my favourite has been Scott Redding as we both come from the same place – Gloucester. I certainly won’t forget when he won his first world 125cc race at Donnington in 2008, I got so excited in the closing stages I ended up jumping up and down whilst watching it on the telly. Not only was Scott Redding the first British rider to win a race in any of the MotoGP classes for quite some years, but at the age of 15 he was also the youngest ever rider to win in that class – younger even than Valentino Rossi was when he won his first 125 race, and he is arguably the greatest motorcycle racer ever.

As you have probably guessed by now I am a bit of a fan, so I was thrilled when I got the chance to photograph Scott as part of his fundraising efforts for this year’s racing.

Unfortunately the economic events of recent years mean that some racers are having to take money to their teams. To help with this, Scott is having a fundraiser in Gloucester on the 16th January (to find out more please click the link: Scott Reading Fundraiser).

As well as auctioning signed memorabilia from other motorcycle racers, Scott will be auctioning some of these images as signed prints.

If you want to know which prints he is using you will have to go along to the event at Branson’s Motorcycles on the 16th January!

There is also some good news for Scott about a Moto2 ride this year. Hopefully this will be a better ride this year with more reliable machinery.

You can see how Scott gets on this year by following him when the season starts in April. I know I will be following the MotoGP race season and cheering for Scott and the other Brits.
