From A Different Viewpoint: The Wedding Caterer

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

I like to invite trusted wedding vendors and suppliers to write guest posts on the blog, offering something other than photography for brides to be planning their wedding celebrations. Today Ally Dow from Glasshouse Hospitality has written a few words giving more of an insight into the role of wedding caterers – it isn’t just about the menu! Glasshouse Hospitality are a superb Edinburgh based company with a wealth of experience in organising, planning and delivering stunning weddings, parties and corporate events throughout Scotland. I first met Brian Galbraith, who launched Glasshouse Hospitality, on a ship in Dundee! Brian was onboard organising the ship’s official launch party and events which were to take place the following week in Aberdeen over three days; and I was onboard visiting work colleagues from my previous life working on subsea construction ships in the oil industry.

I was immediately impressed with Brian, the way he works, his passion for delivering the best possible experience, and the care he has for his company and clients. Since that first meeting I have learnt more about Brian’s business and have no hesitation in working with Glasshouse Hospitality and recommending them to my own clients. They plan and deliver superb weddings and events from the small to the extravagant. Each wedding is tailored so that every desire is met and catered for, be it an Asian wedding or a marquee wedding, matrimonials in a castle or on a clifftop. So enough from me, here are a few words from Ally at Glasshouse Hospitality.

From the a different viewpoint: the wedding caterer

The term “wedding caterer” seems somewhat inadequate in describing the reality of what our job actually entails. Far from just dealing with dietary requirements on the day, by the time a lot of our couples tie the knot we feel we know them, having spent hours in the weeks, months (even years) before the wedding helping them choose chair covers and linen, organise flowers, decide on timings, menus, entertainment, venues…

It’s all leading up to one thing, ”the big day” – the wedding. Recognised as one of the most important days of your life, our ultimate role is to make sure everything is perfect so that couples can relax and enjoy it.

However, once the dancing ends and the whirlwind of wedding madness is over comes the opportunity to relax and reflect on the big day. I think this is where the role of the photographer really complements ours – we aim to create great memories, the photographer aims to capture them. That way great memories can be relived again and again, and all the effort is worth it for the best day  of your life.

I hope that this has given a bit more of a different perspective when planning your wedding. Please let me know what subjects you like for future posts in the comments below.

Angus & Averil’s Wedding

I have been a little slow in posting this as Angus and Averil were married during the summer last year. They chose to celebrate their wedding at Achnagairn House, just outside Inverness, with the ceremony held in Inverness. Along with their family and close friends they had exclusive use of the mansion for the weekend, enabling them to complete their wedding preparations in this beautiful setting.

Although Achnagairn House is licensed for weddings Angus and Averil chose to celebrate their wedding ceremony in Inverness.

A wedding at Achnagairn House is a stunning setting for a wedding and after the family the wedding party returned to the Edwardian Mansion house to continue their celebrations. Set in 15 acres of grounds with a river, woodlands and ancient trees it is an exclusive and unique setting for a wedding.

During your stay at Achnagairn House, which is conveniently located near to Inverness, you have exclusive use of the mansion and grounds.

I love to photograph the details at a wedding as with so much happening on  your special day it is so easy to miss the little touches that make your day unique.

I was very tempted...

There were many more images I could have included but hopefully I have given a taste of Angus and Averil’s amazing wedding at Achnagairn House. I will be adding more images to my main wedding photography website in the near future along with finishing a few more updates to the site.

Dean and Dani – a beautiful wedding in Forter Castle

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Dean and Dani chose to have an intimate wedding at Forter Castle in Glen Isla recently, sharing it with close family and friends. Everyone stayed at the castle for the weekend, making it an occasion to remember. I love intimate weddings, they seem so much more personal and this one was no exception.

Wedding Venue - Forter Castle, Scotland

The weekend was blessed with beautiful, unseasonably mild, weather allowing everyone to fully enjoy the castle grounds and surrounding countryside.

The castle is full of character and makes a great setting for a wedding with four poster beds, great fireplaces and historical paintings hanging on the walls, making it a real experience for everyone.

I really enjoy the preparations, the sense of anticipation and excitement, and this time of the day is a great opportunity to create images that help tell the story of the day.

I try not to post too many images in one go so I will post more images from the ceremony, Dean and Dani chose to have a humanist celebration in Forter Castle’s beautiful chapel, along with the rest of the day, soon. I would be delighted if you would come back and have a look.

I hope that you have enjoyed these images, please don’t forget to leave any questions or remarks in the comments below.

Dean & Jo

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I first met Jo in the Lake District, and we connected straight away. The more we talked, the more we found we had in common, it was like catching up with an old friend. And she makes a mean hot chocolate with chilli. Later that evening I met Dean and Coco the dog and learnt more about the plans for their wedding. With family and friends living all over the world, they had decided to wed in Portugal where Dean’s mum, Ze, and some of his family still live. The more I heard about the wedding, the more I loved the sound of it, it was so ‘them’. From driving out to Portugal with Coco their dog to their plans for the day itself, with some of the details being made by Jo’s mum, Sheryl, and brought over from South Africa. With family and friends travelling from seventeen countries around the world to take part, it promised to be a truly special occasion and I was thrilled when I was asked to help them remember it through my photography.

The wedding took place at Quinta de Sant’Ana, a vineyard in Gradil, not far from Lisbon. Gradil is a quiet little town, well off the tourist trail, where very little English is spoken. This certainly added to a few of the adventures I had out there. The local people couldn’t have been friendlier and sign language, a few basic Portuguese words along with a lot of smiling went a long way.

Views across Quinta de Sant'Ana towards the town of Gradil

Quinta de Sant’Ana is a beautiful setting for a wedding. It is a family run vineyard producing wines in the traditional manner. It proved to be a great place for the families to stay in the run up to the wedding, with some helping tread the grapes and the younger members of the family enjoying visiting some of the resident animals.

I travelled out to Portugal early, just in case I encountered any delays or my luggage decided to take in a few other destinations en route to Lisbon (I do hand carry all my camera gear just in case). This gave me an opportunity to get to know Dean and Jo’s families as well as getting a feel for the area. Both families were so warm and welcoming, inviting me to join them throughout the day and sharing their evenings with me.

Entrance to Quinta de Sant'Ana

The day of wedding dawned a little misty but this soon burned off with blue sky and sunshine being the order of the day. The girls made an early start in their preparations at the local hairdressing salon.

I really enjoy this part of the day, with all the anticipation and excitement of what lies ahead. To be allowed to get so close with my camera as the bridal party are pampered and transformed is a privilege and I LOVE it.

Jo starts her preparations

This is a part of the day where I get a chance to be creative and try and something a little different for the bride and groom to remember their day by. I believe that it is so important to tell the story of the day as all too often couple are so busy getting ready and worrying about their guests that they do not have time to take everything in. This next image not only shows Jo’s shoes, an important detail, but it also captures the essence of where she and her family stayed during their visit and prepared for the day.

When photographing a wedding I always keep the wedding album in mind. The details really add to the telling of the day’s story, as well as being a poignant reminder for the bride and groom.

Dean’s cousin, Claudia, did a fantastic job with the girls make up. She is a lady of many talents – as well as make up artist to the bridal party, she had a big hand in some special celebrations later in the evening (but I will save that for a future post).

I will finish this post with an image of the bride’s bouquet. The feathers, provided by Jo’s mum Sheryl, give it a touch of individuality as well as making it very personal.

I will post more images from this wedding soon, so please come back to see them. In the meantime I would be thrilled to hear from the friends I made at the wedding.
